Oriental medicine is a term that refers to a holistic system of medicine developed in Asia over 3000 years ago. It combines time tested healing techniques with current research to address modern health concerns. Based on the concepts of harmony and balance, oriental medicine looks at the whole person, not just the presenting symptoms. Using a systematic diagnostic method, a comprehensive pattern of imbalance is identified and an individual treatment plan is formulated.
Simply put, when there is harmony and balance in the body, the person is healthy. Illness is the result of a loss of harmony and balance. This imbalance can be the result of an acute injury, bacterial or viral infection, working too much, inadequate rest, poor diet or too much stress. Oriental medicine can treat acute or chronic conditions.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the most well known type of Oriental medicine here in the West. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal pharmacology are the cornerstones of this medicine.
